DOT Physicals

What is a DOT Physical and who needs one?

The DOT is a required medical Exam to anyone who operates any commercial vehicles:

  • Vehicles with a gross vehicle weight greater than 10,000 pounds
  • Vehicles designed to transport more than 15 people (or more than 8 people when there is direct compensation involved)
  • Vehicles transporting hazardous materials

If you fall into the above categories, you will need to schedule an appointment with a licensed “medical examiner” listed on the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration National Registry. Once completed, your physical exam is valid up to 24 months. There may be instances where your exam will need to be repeated sooner than 24 months, for example, if you have high blood pressure or another condition that will need to be monitored frequently.

What should I bring to a DOT Physical?

You will need to bring a list of all the medications that you are currently taking, any corrective vision or hearing aids that you use, and any medical records that specifically relate to medical conditions you may have. For example, if you have a heart condition, you will need to bring records from your cardiologist that describe your condition as well as results of your latest ECHO cardiogram and/or stress test.

Dr. Efi Kessous and Patricia Willauer PA-C is a licensed medical examiner listed on the FMCSA Registry.
